Possible plane debris spotted off Australia

Last updated: 5 minutes ago:

Australia sends airforce plane to ocean location of objects possibly related to missing Malaysian plane.

Australia has sent an aircraft to investigate two objects spotted by satellite floating in the southern Indian Ocean that could be debris from a Malaysian jetliner missing with 239 people on board, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said.

"New and credible information has come to light in relation to the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 in the southern Indian Ocean," Abbott told the Australian parliament on Thursday.

No confirmed wreckage from Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has been found since it vanished from air traffic control screens off Malaysia's east coast early on March 8, less than an hour after taking off.

"The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has received information based on satellite imagery of objects possibly related to the search," Abbott said.

"Following specialist analysis of this satellite imagery, two possible objects related to the search have been identified," he said.

In a news conference in Canberra, John Young, an Australian maritime official, said that one of the objects spotted could be as large as 24 metres.

Abbott said he had already spoken with his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak and cautioned that the objects had yet to be identified, according to Reuters news agency.

"The task of locating these objects will be extremely difficult and it may turn out they are not related to the search for MH370," Abbott said.

Malaysia's transport minister, Hishammudin Hussein, confirmed the new lead to reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

He was speaking after Australia sent aircraft to investigate two objects spotted by satellite floating in the sea.

Abbott said that a Royal Australian Airforce Orion has been diverted to the area to attempt to locate the objects. The Orion is expected to arrive in the area on Thursday afternoon, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Three additional aircraft are expected to follow for a more intensive search, he said.

Abbott cautioned, however, that the task of locating these objects will be extremely difficult and "it may turn out that they are not related to the search for flight MH370."

Unprecedented search

Investigators believe that someone with detailed knowledge of both the Boeing 777-200ER and commercial aviation navigation switched off the plane's communications systems before diverting it thousands of miles off its scheduled course from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Exhaustive background checks of the passengers and crew aboard have not yielded anything that might explain why.

The FBI is helping Malaysian authorities analyse data from a flight simulator belonging to the captain of the missing plane, after initial examination showed some data logs had been deleted early last month.

Abbott said a search aircraft was due to arrive at the area where the objects were spotted at about the time he was speaking in parliament.

A media briefing is expected in the Australian capital Canberra at 0430 GMT.

An unprecedented multinational search for the plane has focused on two vast search corridors: one arcing north overland from Laos towards the Caspian Sea, the other curving south across the Indian Ocean from west of Indonesia's Sumatra island
to west of Australia.

SYDNEY:  Two objects possibly related to the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 have been sighted, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Thursday, in a potential breakthrough.
Abbott told parliament “new and credible information” had come to light nearly two weeks after the plane vanished.
He said an Australian air force Orion had already been diverted to look into the objects with three more surveillance planes to follow. He did not specify where they were but Australia has taken charge of the search in the southern Indian Ocean.
“The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has received information based on satellite information of objects possibly related to the search,” Abbott said, adding that he had informed Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“Following specialist analysis of this satellite imagery, two possible objects related to the search have been identified.”
But he warned against drawing any premature conclusions.
“We must keep in mind the task of locating these objects will be extremely difficult and it may turn out that they are not related to the search for flight MH370,” he said.
Authorities in Kuala Lumpur on Monday asked Canberra to take responsibility for the “southern vector” of the operation to locate the Boeing 777, which disappeared on March 8 en route to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board.
The Malaysian government believes the jet was deliberately diverted and flew for several hours after leaving its scheduled flight path – either north towards Central Asia, or towards the southern Indian Ocean.
Australian, US and New Zealand long-range surveillance planes have been scouring a vast tract of the southern Indian Ocean since Tuesday, with the search focused on an area of 305,000 sq km (122,000 square miles), some 2,600km southeast of Perth. – AFP
